Farewell, beautiful lady. You will be missed.
There are few words to describe how it feels to lose one of your herd when one passes away—not just a pet, but also a friend—and especially when it is the first horse you've lost. Bayadnia was our eldest horse and farm matron, and she will be sorely missed.
The following was written by my best friend, Diane Roe:
Saturday night I sat with a very dear old friend and stroked her beautiful face as she slipped away quietly into another world. Her name was Bayadnia, and I have known her for almost the entire 21 years she graced this world. I was not her "owner"... She actually belonged to my best human friend, Carolyn, and it was through this mare that Carolyn and I met. Bayadnia and Pterski, my stallion, are out of the same dam. Shortly after she acquired Bayadnia, Carolyn saw one of the Pterski's ads in a magazine, and noticed his breeding. She called me, and that three-hour conversation was the start of a wonderful friendship. I had known and worked with Bayadnia for several years before, until she was sold to a man in another part of the state. I did not expect that I would ever see her again, until the day Carolyn called me. Carolyn was amazed to learn that I knew so much of the mare's history, and through our friendship, I was thrilled to be able to become reacquainted with Bayadnia.
When Carolyn found Bayadnia, she had been searching for "the typiest, most beautiful *Nariadni daughter out there". She found that horse in Bayadnia. She was the epitomy of Arabian beauty, especially her head. She had what Arab breeders sometimes refer to as an "extreme" head—huge, expressive eyes, fine-chiseled muzzle, and an incredibly dished face. She was a deep, rich bay, and absolutely elegant in every way.
Unfortunately, sometime between when I last saw her and when Carolyn got her, Bayadnia had suffered a knee injury. She was sound for breeding, but not for any kind of riding or work. She gave Carolyn two incredible colts, and through one of her sons, Padrons Secret, a very beautiful chestnut filly. Bayadnia's knee, however, continued to deteriorate in spite of treatment, and Carolyn quit breeding her 4 years ago.
Over the last week of her life, it was apparent that the time was near. Her knee had gotten very bad, and Carolyn made the agonizing decision to let her go. The appointment was for the following Monday. We wanted to be able to get her to Carolyn's new farm and bury her under a large maple tree in the pasture there.
Saturday, April 21st, was a beautiful spring day here. Bayadnia was getting around quite well, and was even out in her paddock nibbling at grass and enjoying the sunshine. However, at about 8:30 that night, I got a message from Carolyn. "I need you right now, Bayadnia is down in her paddock!" We had already planned that I would be there when the vet came on Monday, to say goodbye and offer support for both my friends.
I got to Carolyn's, she was understandably very upset. We went out to be with Bayadnia, who had gone down and was making no effort to rise whatsoever. She was laying quietly, and did not appear to be in pain or distress. She just knew that it was time now, and waited quietly for the people who loved her to help her to begin her journey.
When the vet arrived, Carolyn said goodbye to her beloved mare. We sat with Bayadnia, talked to her quietly, and stroked her face while the vet administered the drugs.
Bayadnia slipped away very quickly and peacefully, and we covered her with the quilt Carolyn had chosen—one that had belonged to her late brother. Bayadnia was moved to the new farm on Sunday, and buried under that maple tree. When the inevitable day comes, I am honored to know that her brother Pterski will have a place nearby. She lives on in the hearts and memories of those who loved her, and in the grace and beauty of her offspring...
The following was written by Carolyn Boland, owner of Luahana Arabians:
My beautiful Bayadnia,
You are forever in my heart. The joy of knowing you and having your wonderful children around me are a blessing. I am forever in your debt. There will never be enough words to describe what you were to me—my ideal mare, just what I had asked for. You needed to rest, but I still need you. I love you, I miss you, my pretty girl.
I would like to thank everyone for their support, especially my friends and family who helped me through a difficult time.
Thank you from my heart,
Carolyn
